Empowering Youth Football Coaches Forge Strong Connections with Players through ‘Madden’ Gameplay

They grew up playing ‘Madden NFL,’ the incredibly popular video game. Now, they are using their knowledge of the game to teach at the collegiate and professional level. On September 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. EDT, James Rowe III and his brother, David, utilize their expertise from playing Madden NFL to coach football teams. Rowe III recalls how they would play Madden NFL together, with David disappearing right before games only to reemerge as “Coach Rowe,” complete with a headset, whiteboard, and imaginary assistant coaches. Spectators from the neighborhood would gather to watch these intense games, which sometimes led to arguments and WWE-style belt parades. Despite the chaos, Madden NFL helped prepare Rowe III for a coaching career.

Fast forward to the present day, and Madden NFL continues to impact the football community. Recently, a defensive back from the University of South Florida was perplexed by the term “hash dropper” in the team’s playbook. It was Rowe III, now the defensive passing game coordinator and safeties coach at South Florida, who made the connection between the game and the playbook. When he asked the player if he played Madden, the answer was a resounding yes. Rowe III then explained the player’s role as a “yellow” zone defender, just as it would be in the Madden game. The player instantly understood the concept without further explanation.

Madden NFL’s influence extends beyond the players to the coaches as well. Ryan McNamara, a former student at Florida, landed a summer job at EA Sports, where one of his responsibilities was to test Madden NFL. The job allowed McNamara to familiarize himself with the game’s mechanics and learn football strategies. McNamara then sought a coaching career and reached out to various coaches for advice. One person took a chance on him, and McNamara joined the coaching staff at Valdosta State. Although skeptical at first, McNamara’s unique perspective as a Madden NFL player gave him insights and ultimately helped him earn respect from his colleagues and players. Valdosta State even won the Division II national championship in his first season.

Madden NFL has become more than just a video game; it is now intertwined with the football world. The passion and knowledge gained from playing the game have translated into successful coaching careers for individuals like Rowe III and McNamara. So, the next time you play Madden NFL, remember that you might just be honing your football coaching skills as well.
