Elon Musk’s Twitter Rate Limits Drive Bluesky’s Traffic to Unprecedented Levels

In a surprising move, Twitter CEO Elon Musk introduced rate limits on the number of tweets users can view, resulting in a significant increase in traffic on rival social media platform Bluesky. Musk implemented these limits due to the “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation, which had been detrimental to the user experience on Twitter. The rate limits started at 6,000 posts per day for verified accounts and 600 posts per day for unverified accounts but gradually increased to 10,000 for verified users and 1,000 for unverified users.

When users reached their limits, they encountered error messages like “Rate limit exceeded” or “Unable to load tweets,” causing their feeds to lack fresh content. Frustrated Twitter users turned to Bluesky, a startup that is currently in an invite-only beta testing phase and is supported by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Musk’s implementation of rate limits was a response to the concerning levels of data scraping and system manipulation.

Due to the sudden influx of visitors, Bluesky experienced some performance degradation caused by the record-high traffic. As a result, the social media platform temporarily suspended sign-ups to address these issues, but sign-ups were later resumed on Sunday. According to Bluesky’s website, as of the end of April, they boasted over 50,000 users. Bluesky operates on a waitlist basis for user sign-ups, but it also distributes periodic invitations for existing users to invite others. Users who generate more quality invites receive additional invitation privileges.

Musk attributed the excessive data scraping on Twitter to artificial intelligence companies who were using the platform’s data to train their models. He expressed frustration over having to allocate more servers just to accommodate these AI startups with inflated valuations. Twitter, which no longer has a communications team following Musk’s reshuffle, responded to media requests with an automated message containing a poop emoji. Bluesky has not yet responded to requests for comment.
