Elon Musk’s Tweet Linking Bronny James’ Cardiac Arrest to COVID Vaccine No Longer Fact-Checked on Twitter

In a Twitter post, Elon Musk raised the possibility that the COVID vaccine may have contributed to Bronny James experiencing cardiac arrest while playing for USC basketball. However, the post was quickly removed from the platform, sparking speculation about why the owner of the site deleted it. Bronny James, an 18-year-old college freshman and son of NBA icon LeBron James, was hospitalized after suffering cardiac arrest during a basketball workout in Los Angeles. Musk suggested that while not everything can be attributed to the vaccine, myocarditis is a known side effect that needs to be examined further.

Twitter’s fact-check feature, known as “Community Notes,” promptly labeled Musk’s post and referred to articles from the Yale School of Medicine and CBS News that countered his claim. The fact-check highlighted studies showing that the risk of myocarditis is higher after a COVID infection compared to that of the vaccine. It specifically noted that adolescent boys face twice the risk of myocarditis after a COVID infection compared to the risk after receiving the second vaccine dose. Musk’s post was no longer accompanied by the Community Note on Tuesday evening, leading to speculation that the note was deleted by the platform or Musk himself.

The Community Notes feature operates on a voting system, where users rate the helpfulness of a note in providing context for a tweet. The status of a note can fluctuate based on user ratings, and they may appear or disappear accordingly. Although it’s uncertain who deleted the note, an archived version of the fact-check is still accessible. Musk has yet to clarify his stance, and further comments are awaited. The situation has drawn significant attention and criticism toward Musk for his statements on the vaccine. Notably, journalist Bob Costas was among those who called him out for commenting on James’ condition. It is important to note that there is currently no evidence linking James’ cardiac arrest to the vaccine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), myocarditis is a rare inflammation of the heart muscle that has been reported in some cases involving adolescents and young adult males who received the mRNA vaccine for COVID-19. CDC data reveals that out of 54.8 million doses of the mRNA vaccine administered to children aged 5 to 17 as of May 2022, there were 635 cases of diagnosed myocarditis. The CDC emphasizes that myocarditis and pericarditis are rare occurrences and that the risks of COVID-19 far outweigh the potential risks associated with the vaccine. Up until Wednesday, James’ condition had been improving, and his parents, LeBron James and Savannah, expressed relief. LeBron was spotted visiting his son at the hospital earlier.
