Elon Musk to Downsize Twitter Team by 50% and Discontinue Remote Work Option

According to a report from Bloomberg, Tesla engineers have been called upon to review Twitter’s code, and layoffs within the engineering department are being determined based on employees’ contributions. It has been reported that Twitter’s top executives, including the CEO and heads of finance and legal, have been fired “for cause,” potentially voiding their $100 million severance packages. While the exact extent of the cutbacks is yet to be confirmed by Elon Musk, it has been revealed that he plans to implement widespread reductions. However, concerns have arisen from advertisers and civil liberties groups regarding Musk’s intentions to promote free speech on the platform, as this could potentially result in an increase in hate speech. Additionally, Musk is contemplating lifting permanent bans on numerous accounts, including that of former US President Donald Trump. Musk recently conducted a Twitter poll inquiring whether advertisers should support “freedom of speech” or “political correctness,” leading to General Motors halting their advertising spending. Advertisers fear that these changes may undermine content moderation on the platform and have expressed their willingness to withdraw their ads if Musk proceeds. In response to Musk’s takeover of Twitter, beer brewing company Carlsberg has already paused its advertising spending. Carlsberg has advised its brand teams to cease advertising activities while closely monitoring the situation. Interpublic Group, a prominent advertising company, has also recommended that its clients temporarily halt ad spending on Twitter. In a commitment to civil liberties groups, Musk has pledged to restore access to content moderation tools that had been blocked for some staff since he assumed control over the company. The Telegraph has reached out to Twitter for comment.
