Elon Musk asserted that his newly launched artificial intelligence company, xAI, is more trustworthy than OpenAI and Google in developing safe AI systems as computers surpass human intelligence.

However, although Musk discussed his AI plans on Twitter after the company’s launch, he did not elaborate on how xAI’s work would differentiate from its more advanced competitors or the specific services it aims to create.

With a mission to “understand the true nature of the universe,” xAI entered the race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), machines with human-level intelligence. Musk, who previously advocated for a delay in AGI development for safety considerations, joined forces with other experts by signing a letter supporting the cause.

During a lengthy and wide-ranging discussion on social media, which attracted over 30,000 listeners, Musk touched on topics like the existence of aliens and the possibility of superintelligent machines choosing not to harm humanity. However, he acknowledged that xAI’s work is still in its early stages, describing it as “embryonic.”

Musk revealed that his involvement in AI began with OpenAI, where he felt that Google co-founder Larry Page didn’t prioritize AI safety enough. He parted ways with OpenAI before its groundbreaking advancements in large language models, leading to the launch of ChatGPT in late 2020.

The entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX criticized the profit-driven motives of OpenAI and the influence of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) mandates on Google and Microsoft as public companies. In contrast, Musk emphasized xAI’s independence as a privately held company, allowing it more freedom to operate.
