Elon Musk Removes ‘Block’ Feature from X Despite Concerns Over User Safety from Stalkers, Scammers, and Spammers

The popular social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is set to undergo changes that may result in an increase of spam, harassment, and unregulated free speech. Billionaire Tesla chief and owner of X, Elon Musk, announced his intention to remove the ability for users to “block” other users on the site, with the exception of private direct messages.

This announcement sparked concerns among X users, including those subscribed to the premium service, X Premium, which was previously known as Twitter Blue. Many users compared the “block” feature to self-defense and their rights under the 2nd Amendment. However, co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, praised the decision, suggesting that only muting should be allowed.

Elon Musk has faced controversy in the past regarding changes made to the platform since he took ownership in October of the previous year. In June, he faced accusations of restricting free speech when he reneged on a deal to air a film funded by Daily Wire, citing concerns about misgendering transgender individuals. Musk later admitted it was a mistake made by his staff.

X, which has suffered a significant decrease in value since Musk’s acquisition, has been dealing with competition from platforms like Meta’s Instagram-based Threads and Mastodon, an open-source microblogging platform. In an effort to attract more advertisers, Musk recently announced plans to reduce ad rates on X by 50%.

While it remains uncertain if Musk will follow through with disabling the block feature, many users have pleaded with him to reconsider. They argue that blocking is essential for their peace of mind and protection against cyberstalkers. Some users have compared the removal of the block feature to losing the right to self-defense, urging Musk to preserve this important feature.
