Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur who serves as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the owner of Twitter, has recently revealed the launch of his new AI venture, xAI. The company aims to delve into the mysteries of the universe. Musk and his team have planned a live Twitter Spaces chat on Friday to share more details about this ambitious project.

The xAI team consists of talented individuals who have previously worked with prominent organizations like DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla. Some of their notable projects include DeepMind’s AlphaCode and OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 chatbots. Musk seems determined to position xAI as a competitor to leading chatbot companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, responsible for products such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Claude.

Reports about Musk’s AI startup first surfaced in April, thanks to coverage from The Financial Times. These reports also mentioned Musk’s acquisition of thousands of GPU processors from Nvidia, which are expected to power a potential large language model. During an interview on Fox News Channel, Musk shared his plans for a new AI tool named “TruthGPT” and expressed concerns about the current AI landscape, citing a preference for systems that prioritize accuracy over political correctness.

Dan Hendrycks, the executive director of the Center for AI Safety, will serve as one of the advisors for xAI. In May, Hendrycks co-signed a letter with other tech leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize mitigating the risks associated with AI, similar to concerns surrounding pandemics and nuclear war. However, critics argue that excessive focus on future AI threats distracts from addressing the harms caused by existing algorithms in marginalized communities.

The co-founder of xAI, Greg Yang, envisions the startup delving into the mathematical foundations of deep learning. Their goal is to develop a comprehensive theory for large neural networks, taking AI to unprecedented heights of advancement.

Musk officially incorporated xAI in Nevada in March. While he previously made financial filings referring to Twitter as “X Corp,” xAI’s website clarifies that it operates independently from X Corp. The company states that it will collaborate closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards its mission.
