Elon Musk eliminates free lunches at Twitter in order to cut annual expenses by $13 million

During a conference in Bali, Elon Musk revealed that he is tirelessly working day and night, seven days a week. In addition to Twitter, Musk also holds top positions in Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company. He confessed that his workload is overwhelming.

On Monday, Musk announced that he would be “working & sleeping” at Twitter’s San Francisco office until the organization is fixed. Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter has eliminated remote work and required employees to be back in the office for a minimum of 40 hours per week. This decision sparked a confrontation between Musk and a former Twitter executive, Tracey Hawkins, who criticized the removal of free meals. Hawkins argued that the meals allowed employees to work through lunchtime and have meetings.

Notably, Musk’s decision to cancel free meals followed the dismissal of 4,400 of Twitter’s 5,500 contractors. Among those let go were employees responsible for online safety. Moreover, Twitter has also downsized its outsourced workers who handle reports of potentially hateful tweets by roughly 50%. Earlier this month, Twitter had already laid off 50% of its full-time staff.
