Elon Musk recently took to Twitter to condemn the use of the words “cis” and “cisgender” as slurs. This came after a user complained about receiving harassing messages from “trans activists” calling him derogatory names. Musk stated that these words are considered slurs on the platform and that repeated targeted harassment will result in temporary suspensions for the accounts involved.
Conservative commentator James Esses also chimed in, sharing that he had received similar messages after expressing his rejection of the word “cis.” The response to Musk’s tweet was varied, with some users supporting his stance, others questioning how “cis” could be considered a slur, and some calling the move extreme.
One user pointed out that the term “cis” originated from German sexologist Volkmar Sigusch, who used it to describe individuals who identify with their assigned sex at birth. Musk responded by referring to Sigusch as a “contemptible creep” and suggested ignoring him.
Another user questioned why the platform doesn’t ban the use of racial slurs if they consider “cis” a slur. While Twitter’s policy on hateful conduct does not explicitly list slurs, it condemns any language that reinforces negative stereotypes or aims to degrade others.
It remains uncertain whether Twitter will uphold the ban on the terms “cis” and “cisgender,” and Musk has faced criticism in the past for making decisions based on personal vendettas. He has also been accused of suppressing tweets and direct messages containing certain words. Since Musk acquired Twitter, there has been an increase in tweets containing racial slurs targeting black individuals, although some experts attribute this to anti-Musk trolls trying to cause chaos on the platform.
Just recently, civil rights attorney Alejandra Caraballo criticized Twitter for failing to moderate neo-Nazi propaganda. Caraballo discovered numerous results related to a propaganda film that promotes anti-Semitic themes blaming Jewish people for both world wars. She found clips of this movie being uploaded to Twitter.
It is worth noting that Musk has a transgender child named Vivian Wilson, formerly known as Xavier Musk. In 2017, Vivian announced her decision to change her gender and drop the Musk surname to avoid association with her billionaire father and his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.
