Elizabeth May Returns Home Following Hospitalization for ‘Overexertion and Exhaustion,’ According to Her Husband

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May was hospitalized last week, according to a post by her husband John Kidder on her constituency website on Sunday.

Kidder revealed that May spent a few days under observation at Saanich Peninsula Hospital before being discharged on Saturday.

“Elizabeth was overwhelmed last week due to excessive work, fatigue, and stress,” he wrote.

The 69-year-old parliamentarian is currently resting at home and will be taking it easy for another week.

In his letter, Kidder criticized the long hours spent by MPs in the House of Commons and expressed frustration with the spring schedule affecting summer festivities.

Kidder also hinted at the long work days for May, questioning the logic of MPs working double shifts through May and June, sometimes up to 19 hours a day and sitting until midnight almost daily, in addition to their constituency work.

Kidder mentioned that May attended nine graduation ceremonies this year, as well as the Toronto Pride Parade and the Calgary Stampede.

Kidder praised the work of healthcare workers but criticized the system, stating that he and May were left waiting for hours in the emergency room without resolution.

May has been the leader of the Green Party since November 2022 after the resignation of former leader Annamie Paul, who took over from May’s initial resignation in 2019.

In the 2022 race, May campaigned alongside Jonathan Pedneault, her current deputy leader.

She has been an MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands since May 2011.
