Editorial: Trump Leaves US Republicans Stumped – The Guardian Perspective

Donald Trump’s absence from the Republican candidates’ debate in Milwaukee did not diminish his influence. Despite facing 91 felony counts in four separate criminal cases, Trump’s popularity among Republican supporters for the 2024 US presidential contest remains unrivaled. This allowed him to undermine the event by opting for a misleading social media interview with Tucker Carlson. Meanwhile, his eight challengers were left competing in a hypothetical contest for a party that is not actually controlled by Trump.

By aligning himself with Trump’s outsider image, Ohio entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy attempted to position himself as Trump’s running-mate for the upcoming election. Additionally, he distanced himself from the establishment politicians within the party. While these candidates present themselves as alternatives to Trump, it is evident that the party is not inclined towards supporting such individuals. This is especially true for former vice-president, Mike Pence, whose certification of Joe Biden’s victory remains controversial among Trump supporters. Similarly, Florida governor Ron DeSantis failed to solidify his position as the primary contender against Trump in the debate.

Although there were occasional clashes and evasions among the candidates, the focus was predominantly on how aggressively they would promote the party’s priorities. Little attention was given to questioning the desirability of these priorities. Key topics of contention included militarizing the southern border, reversing the Biden administration’s climate crisis agenda, and implementing a federal abortion ban. Notably, the sole woman in the debate, Nikki Haley, did not support the abortion ban. On the issue of Ukraine, there was a clear divide between younger Republicans endorsing Trump’s isolationism and older politicians like Chris Christie and Mike Pence, who emphasized the importance of honoring geopolitical commitments.

In the past, candidates’ debates have had significant political repercussions. However, this time, the Republican party is too deeply entrenched in Trump’s influence, focused on appealing to their own echo chamber, and unwavering in their extreme political agenda. Consequently, the party has only won the popular vote in a presidential contest once since 1988. The recent debate in Milwaukee served little purpose and did not bring about any meaningful change. It is crucial for the Republican party to have the courage to confront Trump and his falsehoods and embark on a new path, but there were no signs of such an inclination during the event.
