Edinburgh Festival 2023: A Delightful Review of Strategic Love Play- Unraveling the Clever Ploys of the Dating Scene

In the quest for survival, the pursuit of a mate proves to be surprisingly challenging. Despite the countless years that have passed, humanity continues to grapple with this universal dilemma. Miriam Battye has brilliantly captured the frustration and complexity of finding a partner in her uproarious comedy.

Dubbed “Her and Him” and brought to life by the talented Letty Thomas and Archie Backhouse, the play follows their characters as they embark on a date filled with the customary rituals of getting acquainted. One pint signifies politeness, while two pints hint at the possibility of something more.

However, Her yearns for authenticity. She wants to bypass the pleasantries and truly be herself, urging Him to do the same. Unfortunately, he struggles to provide the right answers to her truth-seeking questions, stumbling and apologizing incessantly. The more he apologizes, the more she becomes intrigued and entertained.

This witty and unpredictable dialogue unfolds around a revolving table on the meticulously designed set by Rhys Jarman. Katie Posner’s remarkable direction for Paines Plough evokes the sensation of watching spinning plates, at times precariously teetering and then reinvigorated.

As the blind date progresses, the couple (whose relationship begins to resemble that of an older husband and wife in Eugene O’Brien’s “Heaven” at the Traverse Theatre) grapple with the same existential questions about uncertainty. Will they be bored? Unfaithful? Mismatched? And is it worth sacrificing comfort and security for the unknown?

The play concludes abruptly, leaving the audience longing for more. Perhaps, in its essence, this is precisely the point. The intricacies of courtship and mating rituals are destined to endure for generations to come.
