Eddie Howe Receives Firm Backing from Saudi Ownership Ahead of Pivotal Week

Amidst a disappointing start to the season for Newcastle United, Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has shown unwavering support for both manager Eddie Howe and the club’s board. This backing echoes comments made by Al-Rumayyan earlier this year, following a defeat in the FA Cup to Cambridge United.

One of the factors that has been unclear since the Saudi takeover is how the Public Investment Fund (PIF) would react during turbulent times for the team. However, there is a sense of composure behind the scenes at St James’ Park, due to the majority stakeholders’ calm approach.

Instead of assigning blame, Al-Rumayyan has sought guidance from fellow board members and is determined to shield Howe from unnecessary pressure in his second full season as Newcastle manager.

Newcastle has experienced three defeats in their first four games of the season, including a disappointing 3-1 loss to Brighton before the international break.

Last season, Newcastle only suffered five league defeats. However, a slow start to the current campaign has led to more scrutiny of Howe and the players. Nevertheless, those in charge of the club understand that a decline was expected this season. Chief executive Darren Eales, director of football Dan Ashworth, and co-owner Amanda Staveley all emphasized in board meetings over the summer that this season would be more challenging than the last.

It has been highlighted to Al-Rumayyan that teams who unexpectedly qualify for the Champions League, like Newcastle did, typically experience a drop of eight positions in the following season. This means that Newcastle could potentially drop to 12th place. However, the main point is that Howe will be given time and unwavering support.

Newcastle’s recruitment strategy has been focused on the long-term future of the club rather than just immediate results. The signings of young talents Tino Livramento (20 years old), Lewis Hall (19 years old), and Sandro Tonali (23 years old) were deliberately made to enhance their development under Howe.

There may be short-term setbacks in order to achieve long-term success for the club. Although no direct reassurances have been given to Howe following the defeat to Brighton, it is hoped that the 45-year-old manager understands he has the full support of the board and they want him to stay in the position for a significant period of time.

Newcastle is entering a crucial period with three consecutive games: a home match against Brentford, the opening Champions League group game against AC Milan, and an away trip to Sheffield United.
