Ecuadorian Woman Passes Away in Hospital a Week After Knocking on Her Coffin During Wake

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A 76-year-old woman, previously declared dead, surprised her relatives by knocking on her coffin during her wake earlier this month. However, her family has now announced that she has passed away after seven days in intensive care.

Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman’s son, informed The Associated Press that doctors at the state hospital confirmed her death on Friday evening.

Ecuador’s health ministry released a statement confirming that Bella Montoya died from an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care. The ministry mentioned that she had been under constant surveillance but did not provide further details about the medical investigation.

Barbera Montoya expressed his disappointment in not receiving any reports from the authorities regarding the medical explanation of the incident. He also revealed that a formal complaint was filed by a sister of the deceased woman, with the goal of identifying the doctor who initially declared her dead.

On June 9, Bella Montoya, a retired nurse, woke up and began knocking after spending five hours in her coffin at a funeral home in Babahoyo, located approximately 208 kilometers (129 miles) southwest of Quito.

The remains of Montoya have been returned to the same funeral home where she regained consciousness. According to her son, she will be buried in a public cemetery.

Last week, the country’s ministry of health formed a technical committee to review the issuance of death certificates at the hospital.
