June 21 (UPI) — Ecuador has joined the Artemis Accords as the 26th nation, signifying a significant milestone in global space exploration collaboration.
The Artemis Accords establish a practical framework of principles to guide nations participating in NASA’s Artemis program. It builds upon previous agreements and reinforces key obligations outlined in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. Additionally, it upholds commitments to the Registration Convention, Rescue and Return Agreement, and responsible behavior practices endorsed by NASA and its partners.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated during the signing ceremony at the Ecuadorian embassy in Washington, D.C., “Today, Ecuador joins the group of nations committed to safeguarding outer space for the future.” This participation demonstrates Ecuador’s dedication to technological advancements and positions the country as a collaborator in the pursuit of global solutions.
By joining the Artemis program, Ecuador aligns itself with the mission of returning humans to the moon and further enhancing space exploration capabilities. With innovative technologies and extensive lunar surface exploration, NASA aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon. These missions will pave the way for establishing a long-term presence on the moon and eventually sending astronauts to Mars.
