East LA Assault Suspect Apprehended for Attacking Multiple Women

A 21-year-old man has been apprehended and is currently in custody for allegedly committing multiple sexual assaults and other crimes over a span of six days in the East Los Angeles area. Sergio Andrew Garcia, who had been the subject of a manhunt since early July, was arrested in Tijuana, Mexico, on Tuesday night. He is being held on $2 million bail. Authorities suspect that he may have committed additional offenses.

The series of attacks began on July 10th around 8:35 a.m. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Garcia followed a woman from the vicinity of Olympic Boulevard and Albany Street in the Pico-Union district. He sexually assaulted her and attempted to remove her clothing as she walked under the Harbor (110) Freeway on Olympic Boulevard, near LA Live Way.

The next day, at around 10:45 a.m., Garcia approached another woman from behind in the area of Chick Hearn Court and Georgia Street, near Crypto.com Arena. He slapped her back and quickly fled the scene.

On July 15th, Garcia is suspected of committing three more crimes. At about 6 a.m. that day, he attacked a 67-year-old woman outside her home in the 1000 block of Fraser Avenue in East Los Angeles. According to the statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Garcia suddenly approached the victim from behind, pulled her hair, and forcefully threw her to the ground. He then repeatedly punched her in the face. The assault was interrupted by a nearby citizen who began shouting at Garcia. Despite this, Garcia punched the victim two more times before fleeing on a black fixed-gear bicycle. The victim, Rosalina Martinez, recounted the terrifying experience and expressed her fear of going out alone on the street.

Later that day, at around 9:20 a.m., Garcia approached a woman walking home from church in the 1300 block of South Alvarado Street. He struck her multiple times in the face, causing her to lose consciousness. He stole her belongings and escaped the scene. Approximately 15 minutes later, in the 1300 block of South Burlington Avenue, Garcia sexually assaulted another woman who was rummaging through the trunk of her car. He then fled from that scene as well.

During a press conference, Sheriff Robert Luna and LAPD Chief Michel Moore revealed that following the publicized crime spree, investigators learned of another assault possibly committed by Garcia on a 55-year-old woman in East Los Angeles during the early morning of July 10th. Luna also mentioned Garcia’s alleged carjacking of a vehicle with a woman inside on the early morning of July 15th, followed by another assault. Both officials believe that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.

Luna and Moore urged any potential victims to come forward and speak out, emphasizing their willingness to listen and provide support. They stated that they anticipate many more victims to come forward and urged anyone who believes they were victimized to contact 800-222-8477.
