Dylan Mulvaney scandal continues to impact Bud Light as sales plunge by an additional 26%

Bud Light’s sales have continued to plummet in the aftermath of the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, while its competitors are seizing the opportunity to gain market share, according to the latest data. During the week ending July 29, sales of the Anheuser-Busch brand dropped by 25.9%, marking a continued decline since the ill-fated collaboration with the trans influencer on April 1. NielsenIQ and Bump Williams Consulting provided this data. Bud Light has lost its position as the best-selling beer in the country for the past three months due to a nationwide boycott following Mulvaney’s endorsement. Dave Williams, CEO of the consulting firm, reaffirms their earlier prediction that Modelo Especial will take the number one spot by the end of the month. According to NielsenIQ, Bud Light currently holds an 8.4% market share compared to Modelo’s 8.2%. Bud Light’s downfall has not only benefited Modelo, but rival brands such as Coors Light (20.7%), Miller Lite (19.25%), and Yuengling Lager (22.5%) have seen double-digit increases in sales. Modelo has outsold Bud Light for a full three months. Anheueser-Busch reported a revenue loss of nearly $400 million in its latest quarterly earnings release as a result of the backlash. Williams states that the situation has not improved for Bud Light. On July 27, Anheuser-Busch announced a workforce restructuring, resulting in the layoff of 400 employees, mainly in marketing positions in St. Louis, New York, and Los Angeles. CEO Brendan Whitworth explains that these decisions were made to ensure long-term success. Many Anheuser-Busch distributors do not anticipate winning back disgruntled Bud Light customers, accepting that they have made their choice to leave the brand.
