Dutch Hospital and Apartment Shootings: Tragic Loss of Lives Resulted in Multiple Fatalities

Two people were tragically killed in separate shootings on Thursday in Rotterdam, a Dutch port city, according to authorities. The shootings took place at the Erasmus Medical Center and a nearby apartment, with fires also breaking out at both locations. Rotterdam police have arrested a suspect, but no motive has been speculated. The exact casualty count is yet to be determined, as police are notifying the next of kin before releasing more details.

Earlier in the day, a man wearing military clothing and carrying a handgun opened fire in a classroom at the university hospital. There was also a shooting reported at a nearby home. A 32-year-old Rotterdam resident was arrested under the hospital’s helipad and is considered a suspect in both shootings. Police do not believe that there are any other shooters involved. The Netherlands has seen a rise in small explosions linked to drug gangs, but gun violence remains rare. (Read more Rotterdam stories.)
