Dublin Airport operator set to appear in court today amidst dispute with council regarding volume of disruptive nighttime flights

The Irish Independent has learned that the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) plans to request a stay today regarding an enforcement notice issued by the Fingal County Council. The notice is in relation to a planning condition for the new €320m runway, which prohibits its use between 11pm and 7am, and limits the total number of flights during that time period to 65. The DAA is expected to argue for an injunction against the enforcement notice in court.

The enforcement notice aims to protect residential amenity and was issued by the Fingal County Council’s Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA). However, some local residents near the airport have expressed opposition, claiming that their quality of life has been negatively affected since the new runway’s opening. According to an official report by ANCA, the number of people living near Dublin Airport exposed to potentially harmful levels of aircraft noise at night has increased by 10% to nearly 1,700 since 2019. The report also reveals that over 21,000 individuals living on flight paths suffer from high levels of sleep disturbance.

In response to the report, the DAA is expected to criticize the methodology used by ANCA in calculating the number of individuals affected by aircraft noise. A spokesperson for the DAA expressed regret that the report was published before the feedback deadline of August 25, stating that they will review the contents and conclusions of the report within the given time frame.
