Dress Yourself and Find Happiness!

I am known in the fashion industry as a respected editor with two decades of experience working for the top newspapers and magazines in the UK. However, I am also a mother going through perimenopause, trying to balance my career and family responsibilities while dealing with the heartbreak of watching my father succumb to dementia. During times of major life changes or when it feels like you’re just going through the motions, it’s easy to lose sight of your true self and feel like you want to fade into the background. But even if you think you’ve figured out your fashion style, our situations, finances, and bodies change over time. Our wardrobes cannot cater to all our needs every single time, which is why sometimes we need to hit the reset button and give ourselves a fresh start. Clothes have the power to bring joy and inspiration. They can help set intentions for our daily mood, make us feel in control, find sparkle even in the darkest moments, and boost our self-confidence during challenging or different periods. So whether you’re going through a breakup, struggling with menopausal symptoms like hot flushes or weight gain, feeling like your wardrobe needs a refresh, or wanting to look amazing at a special event, I have tips to help you look and feel fabulous.

STYLE OUT A BREAK-UP:
When going through times of turmoil in life, it’s often easier to rely on a uniform, something that is repetitive, easy to mix and match, and comfortable. Comfort is key, so consider textures and fabrics that will give you a sartorial hug. Oversized cashmere jumpers, leggings, wide-leg jersey trousers, and lounge trousers with elasticated waists are all great options. Basic white t-shirts, wide strap vests, silky tops, and white shirts are also versatile pieces to have. Reflecting on your identity and expressing it through your clothing can be a helpful way to move forward. Sometimes, without even realizing it, we adapt our style based on our partner’s preferences. Shopping for new clothes, shoes, and accessories can help shift your mindset back to yourself and what makes you happy. It can instill confidence as you try out new styles and ways of dressing. Most importantly, investing in yourself and your style after a breakup can be liberating. Treat getting dressed every day as a therapeutic activity just for you. Wear pieces that bring you joy and instantly boost your mood in the morning.

CLOTHES THAT WORK WHEN YOUR WEIGHT FLUCTUATES:
We all deserve to have a wardrobe filled with properly fitting clothes that make us feel incredible and don’t make us feel the need to change ourselves. Start by going through what you currently own and sort them into piles to keep, sell, alter, or donate. You don’t need to replace your entire wardrobe at once. Take your time to consider where you’ll be spending most of your time, whether it’s at the office, taking care of children, or working from home. Shift the focus from “where do I even begin?” to “What pieces do I need for the next few months?” Some versatile wardrobe staples for fluctuating weight include oversized button-up shirts, wide-leg jersey trousers with elasticated waists, print midi skirts with elasticated waists, loose-fitting and throw-on dresses, and wrap dresses. Kimono-style jackets, khaki shirt-jackets, and cropped trousers in stretchy cotton are also great options. Look for clothing with gathered details that allow extra space and embrace the beauty of oversized pieces like button-up shirts, blazers, and t-shirts. If you’ve lost weight, don’t be afraid to wear items like sweatshirts or t-shirts oversized. Consider consulting a seamstress or tailor to alter clothes that hold sentimental value or were expensive investments.

MENOPAUSAL? LOVE YOUR LAYERS:
Dressing during perimenopause or menopause can be challenging due to fluctuating stomach sizes and unpredictable body temperature. Layers become your best friend in managing hot flushes. You can easily remove or add layers depending on your comfort level. Upgrade your vest tops since they will be more visible. Opt for thicker strap styles for better support. Choose clothing that allows you to move freely, such as fluid dresses in breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk. A trench coat is a practical piece for layering, especially if you size up for extra room underneath. It’s cooler than a wool coat and can accommodate a denim or leather jacket underneath. Building a menopause wardrobe with soft fabrics and feminine silhouettes can help you feel like yourself during this period. Knitwear is a breathable go-to option, along with trousers featuring elasticated waists. Loose-fitting knitted dresses are perfect for winter, while cotton knits and wide-leg linen trousers work well in warmer weather.

EASY WAYS TO DEFRUMP YOURSELF:
At some point, many of us feel like we’ve fallen into a frumpy look. It’s easy to happen, especially if your self-confidence takes a hit or you’ve been focusing on other responsibilities. Updating your basics with some small tweaks can make a big difference. When it comes to shoes, consider brands like New Balance or Veja for a cooler look. Chunky sandals or trainers can instantly modernize a favorite dress. Bold and interesting jewelry also adds a touch of freshness. Sometimes updating means completely redefining your style. If your favorite skinny jeans are no longer working for you, explore other options like high-rise dark denim with a wide leg. Look for inspiration on social media or Pinterest to discover current trends and styles. Don’t let money be the deciding factor when dressing for a landmark birthday or special events. Shop your wardrobe first to see if there are any outfits you can repurpose or restyle. Consider altering the hemline or adding accessories to make them feel new. Clever separates are always a good choice as they offer versatility. Opt for block colors for longevity. Don’t overlook secondhand occasion wear, as you can find barely worn pieces at more affordable prices. Check out online secondhand platforms like Vestiaire, eBay, and Instagram sellers for excellent selections. Outlet shopping, rental services, and borrowing items from friends are also great options to refresh your outfit without breaking the bank.
