Downey Man Accused of Murdering Tijuana Sex Worker Set to Attend Detention Hearing

A detention hearing has been scheduled for Monday to review the case of a man from Los Angeles County who was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in a series of murders targeting strip club workers in Mexico. Bryant Rivera, a 30-year-old resident of Downey, was apprehended on Thursday based on a femicide charge requested by Mexico. Femicide refers to the escalating violence against women that is plaguing the country. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Rivera is accused of murdering at least one sex worker in Tijuana. It is anticipated that Mexico may add additional charges once the formal request for extradition is submitted by the prosecutors.

During the detention hearing, federal prosecutors are expected to request that Rivera be held in custody until the extradition proceedings take place.

According to the complaint, Rivera allegedly beat and strangled Ángela Acosta Flores to death on January 24, 2022, in a room at Hotel Cascadas, which is located next to the Hong Kong Gentlemen’s Club in Zona Norte, a red light district in Tijuana.

Last year, Baja California Attorney General Iván Carpio Sánchez described the unidentified killer of Flores and at least two other Tijuana sex workers as exhibiting “violent and psychopathic behavior” similar to serial killer Ted Bundy.

Flores, who was 20 years old, had been working as a stripper and occasional prostitute at the Hong Kong bar for approximately five months, confirmed by her mother during the investigation.

On the night of the murder, the victim sent a text to her mother stating that she was going to a hotel room with a client for 30 minutes. According to the complaint, security cameras captured footage of a man and Flores together before entering the room.

When the mother began to worry, Flores’ boyfriend went to the bar to look for her. Although he could not locate her, one of the workers informed him that Flores had been seen with a male client who had a light brown complexion, acne scars on his face, stood approximately 5-foot-5, and had brown hair.

The complaint states, “The woman added that she knew the victim’s client as ‘Bryant Rivera,’ and that he was a ‘gringo’.”

Flores’ mother and boyfriend went to the hotel in search of information and remained there until they were informed that a deceased woman had been discovered in room 404.

According to the complaint, a dancer at the bar revealed that she had met a man who matched the suspect’s name and description hours before the murder and had gone to a hotel room with him. She further stated that around 10 p.m. that night, she witnessed the man known as Rivera leaving the bar with Flores.

The document states that Rivera returned on foot to the United States via the San Ysidro port of entry shortly after midnight on January 25, 2022, as per the border control records.

The complaint and provisional arrest warrant for Rivera had been sealed by a federal judge in downtown Los Angeles on June 29 due to concerns that the suspect “is likely to flee if he learns of the existence of a warrant for his arrest.” However, it was unsealed after Rivera’s arrest a week later.
