Don’t Miss Out: Council District 6 Special Election Voting Deadline is Tuesday

Don’t miss the Tuesday deadline to vote in the special election for the City Council’s District 6 seat. The candidates, Imelda Padilla and Marisa Alcaraz, are competing to fill the vacancy left by former Council President Nury Martinez.

In the first round of voting on April 4, Padilla, a community relations manager, garnered 25.65% of the vote, leading the pack of seven candidates. Alcaraz, a City Council aide, came in second with 21.13%, necessitating a runoff.

Padilla has made it a priority to address the unhoused crisis. Her campaign website states that she will propose emergency remediation of encampments and connect the unhoused population with essential services for housing, employment, and health. She aims to work with various stakeholders to implement practical local solutions.

Padilla, born and raised in Van Nuys, has an impressive educational background with a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree from Cal State Northridge.

Alcaraz has also expressed her commitment to helping people without homes and getting them into housing with the care they need. She supports extensive outreach efforts and a “Housing First” approach. Alcaraz believes in investing in outreach teams that include healthcare professionals and mental health professionals.

Additionally, Alcaraz advocates for using government properties to build temporary shelter facilities, leasing existing buildings for housing, acquiring vacant properties for long-term development, and establishing a Homeless Navigation Center for comprehensive services.

Like Padilla, Alcaraz also has an impressive educational background, having received a bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine and a master’s degree from USC.

District 6 consists of Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and parts of North Hills and North Hollywood.

Voters in the district received vote-by-mail ballots in late May. Voting centers will be open on Monday and Tuesday, offering convenient locations for casting ballots. Additionally, vote-by-mail drop boxes are available until Tuesday.

Even if eligible residents missed the registration deadline, they can still cast their votes at any vote center.

Let your voice be heard and make your vote count in this special election. The winner will serve the remainder of Martinez’s term until December 2024.
