Domingo Germán of the Yankees throws a flawless game as he pitches a perfect game

Oakland, Calif. — Last night, Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees achieved an incredible feat by pitching the 24th perfect game in major league history. He retired all 27 Oakland batters in an impressive 11-0 victory over the Athletics. This marks the first perfect game since Félix Hernández’s remarkable performance against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 15, 2012. Notably, Germán became the first pitcher in the big leagues this year to complete a no-hitter.

In accomplishing this remarkable feat, Germán joins the esteemed company of Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998), and David Cone (1999), who are the only other Yankees pitchers to have thrown perfect games. It is worth mentioning that Larsen’s perfect game occurred during Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

“This is incredibly exciting,” Germán expressed through a translator. “Pitching a perfect game is a unique accomplishment in baseball, and not many people have the opportunity to achieve it. This is something that I will cherish and remember forever in my career.”

What makes this achievement even more noteworthy is the fact that it was Germán’s first complete game in his career as a Yankee. As mentioned by CBSSports.com’s Matt Snyder, Germán entered the game after struggling in his previous two starts, allowing a total of 17 runs in just 5 and 1/3 innings. Remarkably, Germán bounced back from those performances to deliver a perfect game, making him the pitcher who allowed the most runs in the outing preceding a perfect game in history.

Germán (5-5) struck out nine of the 27 batters he faced from the A’s, who currently hold the worst record in the majors. With this brilliant performance, Germán showcased his exceptional skills on the mound.

This 30-year-old right-hander, a seven-year veteran, faced hurdles earlier this year when he served a 10-game suspension due to his ejection from a game in Toronto for using an illegal sticky substance on his hands. However, Germán proved his resilience and determination on the field by pitching flawlessly.

Throughout the game, Germán showcased exceptional control, with 72 of his 99 pitches landing as strikes. He expertly utilized a combination of 51 curveballs, 30 fastballs averaging 92.5 mph, 17 changeups, and one sinker to deceive the opposing batters.

The final inning was a thrilling moment, with the crowd of only 12,479 fans rising to their feet to witness Germán’s historic achievement. As he closed out the game, Aledmys Díaz and Shea Lanegeliers were retired, followed by Esteury Ruiz’s groundout, sparking an eruption of celebration from Germán’s teammates who rushed onto the mound.

In addition to marking Germán’s 500th career strikeout, this game also represents the 13th no-hitter in Yankees history. Notably, the previous no-hitter was accomplished by Corey Kluber on May 19, 2021, against the Texas Rangers.

Seth Brown of the Athletics came closest to disrupting Germán’s perfect game, hitting a sharp grounder that was expertly fielded by first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who made a diving stop and threw to Germán for the out.

Offensively, Giancarlo Stanton contributed to the Yankees’ victory by hitting a home run for the first time in more than two weeks and driving in three runs. Former Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson also played a significant role, contributing three RBIs. The Yankees’ dominance over the A’s continued, as this win marked their 15th victory in 21 games against Oakland since August 31, 2019.

Despite being far from his peak performance throughout his career, Germán finally lived up to the promise and potential he had as a top prospect. This incredible achievement solidifies his place among baseball’s elite pitchers.
