Doja Cat set the stage ablaze at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12), fully prepared to “Paint the Town Red” – and she certainly delivered.
Taking the spotlight at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Doja Cat donned an outfit inspired by teachers, surrounded by fiery, red-toned dancers as she performed a medley of tracks. Her performance included her chart-topping hits “Red” and “Attention” from the Billboard Hot 100, as well as her latest single “Demons.” These songs will be featured on her highly anticipated fourth studio album, Scarlet, set to release on Sept. 22.
In its fifth week on the Hot 100, “Paint the Town Red” climbed from No. 3 to No. 1. This achievement marks Doja Cat’s second career leader, following her hit collaboration “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj in 2020. Notably, this is the first rap song to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 in over a year, marking the end of the genre’s longest hiatus atop the chart since 2001.
Doja Cat has garnered six nominations at this year’s show, including Song of the Summer for “Paint the Town Red,” Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Video of the Year for “Attention,” as well as Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration for “I Like You (A Happier Song)” featuring Post Malone.
Other performers at this year’s MTV VMAs include Anitta, Cardi B, Demi Lovato, Diddy, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Maneskin, Megan Thee Stallion, Metro Boomin (featuring Future, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Swae Lee, and NAV), Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Peso Pluma, Shakira, Stray Kids, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
