The unforgettable performance by Doja Cat at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards will be etched in our memories.
Known for her extravagant performances, as seen in the 2021 Grammys and her sensational Coachella set in 2022, the superstar rapper took it to another level on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Doja Cat showcased the three lead singles from her upcoming album, Scarlet: “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red,” and “Demons.” To set the stage, she appeared as a seductive librarian surrounded by a group of demon dancers soaked in fake blood.
In the weeks leading up to the release of her new album on September 22, Doja Cat has been building anticipation. Unlike her previous album rollouts for “Hot Pink” in 2019 and “Planet Her” in 2021, “Scarlet” takes on a darker visual tone. The rapper has incorporated blood, tarantulas, devil cosplay, and even Christina Ricci music video cameos.
In an interview for the September 2023 Icons issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Doja Cat shared, “This new album delves into introspection, but without losing its excitement. It offers both storytelling and catchy tunes. It’s a perfect canvas for me to showcase my rap skills and express what’s happening in my life. However, I’m not abandoning my pop and singing abilities that I’m known for.”
