Dodge Challenger Edges Out Ford Mustang by a Slim Margin of 35 Sales in Q3 2023 – A Thrilling Race!

Get ready, folks! We’re now in the final quarter of the last year of the intense competition between these iconic pony cars, and it’s turning into an exciting nail-biter. In 2024, the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro will bid farewell, leaving the Ford Mustang as the undisputed champion of Detroit’s muscle car scene by default. However, before that happens, we have a neck-and-neck street fight to determine the winner of the 2023 sales crown.

And trust us when we say that this is no exaggeration. With third-quarter 2023 sales data available from Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet, it’s clear that the Mustang and Challenger are virtually tied as of September. Currently, Dodge is in the lead with 35,350 Challenger sales, while the Ford Mustang is trailing closely behind with 35,315 homes found. The difference between them is a mere 35 cars. Heck, by the time this article is published, Ford might have taken the lead!

And guess what? We’re not exaggerating this time either. According to Ford’s Q3 sales report, Mustang sales in September saw a staggering 90 percent increase. This is the first full month of sales for the seventh-generation model, and it’s clear that the car is already gaining massive popularity. Ford reveals that 2024 Mustangs are selling out within six days of arriving at dealerships. Out of the 9,884 Mustangs sold in the three-month quarter, a whopping 6,575 were sold in September alone. In simple terms, the Mustang is set to finish the year on a high note.

But Ford will need all the strength it can muster to reclaim the title of America’s best-selling pony car from Dodge. Despite a strong September, Mustang sales are still down 3.5 percent from last year. Let’s not forget that 2022 was Mustang’s worst sales year in history. The only reason the 2023 sales race is so close is because Challenger sales have also declined. It has dropped by 33 percent compared to Q3 2022, and overall, the big muscle machine is down 16 percent for the year. This is the final year for the Challenger as we know it, with a new model set to arrive but not in the immediate future. Will it be able to end its remarkably long production run on top?

Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Camaro won’t be able to claim victory either, and quite frankly, that’s a tragedy. While we’ve been engrossed in the Mustang-Challenger battle, the Camaro has been quietly having a positive sales year. Q3 sales totaled 7,351 units, a slight decrease of 7.2 percent. However, Camaro sales have seen an impressive 28.7 percent increase for the year. Regrettably, this only translates to 24,688 sales for the bow tie, highlighting just how challenging 2022 was for Chevy fans.

Similar to the Challenger, the Camaro will also retire in 2024. Chevrolet has expressed its intention to bring it back at some point, but unlike the Challenger, we have no idea when or in what form the Camaro will make its return.

With three months remaining in the sales year, you can rest assured that executives at all three Detroit brands will be closely monitoring the sales figures. As for the rest of us, let’s soak in the excitement and relish this moment. If the Mustang-Challenger-Camaro battle ever makes a comeback in the future, it won’t just involve two-door V8 coupes from Motown.
