It’s the end of an era. Last week, Freemans announced the discontinuation of its catalogue.

With this announcement, the days of printed mail order catalogues, which gained popularity after World War II, have come to an end for major retailers.

One of my personal favorites was The Next Directory. Its arrival on the doorstep was like a Christmas present, twice a year.

Opening the Next Directory was a gateway to a sophisticated, refined, and accessible lifestyle. I could even shop for bikinis while enjoying a bath.

During its peak, the Next Directory made waves by featuring future supermodels Yasmin Le Bon, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell.

I still possess the second-ever Next catalogue, published in autumn 1988. It’s a hardback with a whopping 350 pages.

This catalogue holds sentimental value to me because Next temporarily ceased production of its Directory during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

I still treasure a Next Directory from 1988. Please, bring it back, supremos!

I can still vividly recall my first Laura Ashley catalogue from the late 1970s. The polka dots, the pie-crust collars, and the idyllic fields.

Oh, the memories of Kays and Grattan. I still have my mother’s knitting and sewing catalogues from the 1960s, graced by Twiggy on the cover.

These catalogues provided a tangible connection and groundedness that online shopping cannot replicate.
