Ditch the Carry-on Chaos! Lufthansa to Introduce Game-changing, Supersized Overhead Luggage Bins by 2025

The chaos of passengers scrambling to cram cases into overhead stowage compartments on planes is increasingly likely to become a thing of the past.

That’s because new breeds of extra-large overhead bins have been rolled out, with more expected to be fitted in the near future.

The new Airspace L Bin, created by Airbus, is set to be installed on 38 of Lufthansa’s A320s in January 2025.

These bins provide 60% more capacity than the previous-generation A320 bins, allowing for three additional bags per bin and able to accommodate bags with dimensions of 61cm (height) x 38cm (width) x 25cm (depth).

For comparison, Ryanair’s large cabin-bag allowance is 55cm (height) x 40cm (width) x 20cm (depth).

Airbus stated: ‘L Bins are designed to be retrofitted in three to five days, making it Airbus’s fastest and most cost-effective A320 retrofit solution.

‘This results in minimal aircraft downtime for the airline. Additionally, L Bins allow for three extra bags per bin, improving the boarding and deplaning experience for both customers and crew.’

The bins, made of lightweight and stable composite materials, will be manufactured by EFW (Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH).

Airbus prioritizes waste reduction by reusing many components of the original bin, including the sidewall, ceiling, and lighting.

American Airlines, on the other hand, was the first to adopt the Airbus Airspace XL overhead luggage bin, capable of fitting cases up to 60cm in height (24 inches) x 40cm in width (16 inches) x 25cm (10 inches) in depth.

American launched the Airspace XL on its Airbus A321 neo aircraft.

Charbel Youzkatli, Airbus Head of Commercial Services Europe, commented: ‘We have learned from discussions with airline customers that bigger bins are
