Distribution of certain drugs restricted by Pfizer following North Carolina tornado

Pfizer announced that it is imposing restrictions on the distribution of certain drugs produced at its Rocky Mount, North Carolina plant, which was hit by a tornado last month. In a letter to hospitals, Pfizer listed 12 injection products that will only be distributed through emergency orders due to their high medical need. Some of these injections were already in short supply as of last month. This includes sodium chloride injection, which replenishes water and salt lost due to certain conditions, and an injection used to treat metabolic acidosis. However, the list also includes drugs that did not have supply issues as of last month. It is unclear how much supply of these products comes from the damaged plant. Previously, Pfizer stated that the facility supplies 8% of all sterile injectable medicines used in US hospitals. The company did not mention if the new limits will worsen existing shortages or lead to new ones. The nation is already facing a shortage of various medications. Pfizer advised hospitals to check with wholesalers and distributors for the availability of the 12 products and to consider alternatives before placing emergency orders. The company assured that all other products manufactured at the plant, not included on the list, are available in the distribution chain. Pfizer is currently evaluating the timeline for bringing the plant back online. The tornado primarily damaged a warehouse facility, while the drug-manufacturing areas were relatively unaffected.
