Amid speculation during the recent SAG-AFTRA strike, Disney has delayed the release of “Deadpool 3.” The movie’s release date has been moved from May 3, 2024, to July 26, 2024.
Disney announced several other date changes, shifting its theatrical release slate. “Deadpool 3” took the spot previously held by “Captain America: Brave New World,” now set for release on Feb. 14, 2025. Also, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” has been delayed from Dec. 20, 2024, to July 25, 2025, and the “Blade” reboot release has moved from Feb. 15, 2025, to Nov. 7, 2025.
Aside from Marvel, Disney has also delayed the prequel to the 2019 CGI remake of “The Lion King.” The release date for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins, has changed from July 5, 2024, to Dec. 20, 2024. In addition, the studio has removed two other dates — July 25, 2025 and Nov. 7, 2025 — which were set for unspecified features.
With the recent end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel Studios is getting ready to resume production on “Deadpool 3.” Despite the delay, it is still planned to be the only Marvel Studios film set to release in 2024.
Anthony Mackie’s lead role in “Captain America: Brave New World” had already finished principal photography before the actors’ strike, but it will now face a seven-month delay. On the other hand, “Thunderbolts” and “Blade” have not started production yet.
With “Deadpool 3” leaving its original May release date, there’s now a gap in next year’s summer blockbuster line-up. Disney still has another tentpole set for May, with 20th Century Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” scheduled for the 24th. There is speculation that a different studio will claim the first days of May.
