Disney-Owned Channels Removed From Spectrum Cable Due to Cost Disagreement

On the day the college football season commenced, Spectrum cable abruptly removed ESPN, ABC, and other Disney-owned channels from its lineup due to failed negotiations over carriage fees.

At 5 p.m., the channels went dark and were replaced by a message from Spectrum assuring customers that they are working towards restoring the programming as soon as possible.

Spectrum issued a statement on their website stating, “We have presented Disney with a fair deal, but they are demanding an excessive increase. Additionally, they aim to restrict our ability to offer customers greater programming options, forcing them to pay for channels they may not want.”

Spectrum is committed to minimizing costs while prioritizing customer choice,” they added.

In response, Disney explained that their proposed rates are influenced by market conditions.

Disney stated, “We have been negotiating with Charter Communications for some time now, but have not yet reached an agreement based on market standards. Disney Entertainment has successfully reached deals with a variety of pay TV providers across the country, and the rates and terms we are seeking in this renewal are driven by market demand. We remain dedicated to finding a mutually acceptable resolution with Charter and urge them to cooperate in order to minimize disruptions for their customers.”

In Los Angeles, this means that Spectrum subscribers can no longer access ABC7, ESPN channels, Freeform, FX, FXX, and National Geographic.

The removal of these channels coincided with ESPN’s coverage of Thursday night college football games and the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Many viewers expressed their frustration on social media. One viewer tweeted, “So fantasy football is about to start and Spectrum is stating that they are in a dispute with Disney about retaining ESPN in their programming? You have until Saturday to resolve this.”

Another viewer wrote, “Really, Disney? During the US Open? I’ve never seen a broadcaster just abruptly cancel their programming in the middle of a show.”
