Disney Gives in to Player Demands for ESPN: A Win-Win Solution

A significant number of individuals voiced their dissatisfaction when Disney terminated its ESPN programming on Charter Spectrum last week due to a fee dispute. However, the company paid attention when tennis stars like Coco Gauff and Daniil Medvedev publicly expressed their objection to not being able to watch their competitors’ matches at the US Open in New York, according to the Hollywood Reporter. As a result, the signal was restored for players, some broadcasters, and others covering the tournament in the Queens borough of New York City.

“I suppose in many hotels, they provide Spectrum, so I am no longer able to watch it on TV,” Medvedev remarked during a press conference on Monday evening. He ultimately resorted to watching matches on “pirate websites,” he revealed. John McEnroe, an ESPN analyst, was also affected by the blackout while dealing with COVID-19. Naturally, broadcasts of other sports were impacted as well, including the first weekend of college football. The NFL’s inaugural edition of Monday Night Football is scheduled for next week. Alongside ESPN, ABC and other Disney-owned channels have gone dark on Spectrum. The fee dispute shows no signs of nearing a resolution, as mentioned in CNBC. On Thursday, Disney placed the blame on Charter, and Charter CEO Chris Winfrey stated that “Disney will be who decides” what happens next. (Read more US Open Tennis stories.)
