Discussion on new federal health funding at the premiers meeting scheduled

Provincial and territorial premiers are convening for a three-day meeting in Winnipeg on Monday, with the focus on addressing the challenges in Canada’s healthcare systems.

They will be discussing how to allocate the $46 billion in new health funding that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered in February, in exchange for targeted reforms by provinces and territories.

All provinces and territories, except Quebec, have accepted the funding offer, but none have submitted plans outlining the targets and timelines for implementing improvements to Canada’s public healthcare programs.

Dr. Kathleen Ross, president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association, emphasizes the importance of keeping healthcare at the top of the premiers’ agenda during the meeting.

According to Dr. Ross, little progress has been made in the past few months with regards to understaffed hospitals, closed emergency rooms, and extensive backlogs.

In addition to healthcare, the premiers will also discuss economic issues and affordability during their meetings. These discussions coincide with Prime Minister Trudeau’s visit to eastern Europe to address defense matters.
