Thousands of Apple customers have expressed their discontent with the new iPhone models, claiming that they are overheating just a week after their release, despite being equipped with cutting-edge chips.

Several owners of the new iPhone 15 Pro and its larger Pro Max variant have taken to online forums, including Apple’s customer support pages, Reddit, and various social media platforms, to vent about their devices becoming too hot to handle.

Over 2,000 users on Apple’s community forum reported experiencing this overheating issue. One commenter wrote, “I just got the iPhone 15 Pro today and it’s so hot I can’t even hold it for very long!”

Another post mentioned, “Listening to Spotify while using iMessage, and it’s uncomfortably hot in my hands even without a case. This is pretty alarming as I’ve owned every iPhone since the 6 and never encountered this problem.”

However, some iPhone 15 owners denied experiencing any heat-related problems. Some speculate that cheap charging cables, heavy usage of video or gaming apps, or temporary increased processing during initial device setup could be the cause.

Apple has chosen not to comment on these reports. Their customer support pages suggest that iPhones may become warm during initial setup, wireless charging, or while running graphics-intensive or processor-intensive apps.

The iPhone 15 Pro is the first consumer device to incorporate new 3nm chip technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. This chip technology is also used by Nvidia and other Silicon Valley companies partnered with Apple. With its A17 Pro chip, Apple claims to have implemented transformative changes in its custom processors for graphics and video games. The higher-tier iPhone 15 models, priced at $999 or more, also feature titanium cases, departing from the traditional aluminum or steel designs.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities known for his insights into Apple’s supply chain, stated in a recent note that the overheating issues were likely not related to TSMC’s advanced 3nm node.

“The primary cause is more likely the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight, such as the reduced heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame, which negatively impacts thermal efficiency,” Kuo explained.

Kuo speculated that Apple could potentially resolve the problem through a software update, although this might compromise the performance of the iPhones. He also mentioned that failure to address the issue properly could have an impact on sales.

Wall Street analysts have noted a decline in demand for Apple’s high-end iPhones compared to the previous year, judging from product availability at retailers and customer shipment wait times. UBS analysts observed softer demand in China, suggesting regional macro pressure and the competition posed by new products in the market. Huawei’s newly launched Mate 60 Pro, for example, has been selling out in Chinese stores since its release at the end of last month.

However, the basic iPhone 15 models are reportedly selling better than their equivalents from the previous year, indicating that consumers may be opting for more affordable alternatives due to rising inflation.
