Nearly Two-Thirds of Voters Believe Supporting Ukraine Against Russia is in the National Interest, Poll Reveals
A new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University has found that nearly two-thirds of voters in the United States believe that supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia is in the national interest. The poll, released on Tuesday, shows that 65 percent of voters consider it beneficial for the U.S. to support Ukraine, while 28 percent disagree.
The poll also reveals that Democrats are more inclined to support Ukraine, with 87 percent in favor and only 8 percent opposed. Among independents, 63 percent believe that U.S. support for Ukraine is in the country’s best interest, compared to 30 percent who disagree. The opinions of Republicans are divided, with 49 percent believing it is in the national interest to support Ukraine, and 44 percent thinking otherwise.
When it comes to the amount of assistance provided by the U.S., only 36 percent of respondents believe that the U.S. is doing enough to help Ukraine, while 37 percent think the U.S. is doing too much and 20 percent feel that it is doing too little.
Notably, opinions on the level of support differ based on political affiliation. Republicans generally believe that the U.S. is providing too much support, while Democrats believe that the level of support is appropriate.
Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy stated, “We have your backs, say voters who believe the United States has a stake in holding off Putin. But there are cracks in how much support is too much support depending on which party is asked about the continuing alliance.”
Within the Republican Party, only 19 percent believe that the U.S. is providing the right amount of support, while 59 percent of Democrats think that the support is adequate. Additionally, 15 percent of Republicans think that the U.S. is not doing enough to support Ukraine, compared to 27 percent of Democrats who share the same view.
Among independents, 34 percent believe that the U.S. is providing the right amount of support, 39 percent think that the country is providing too much, and 20 percent believe that the U.S. is providing too little.
Since September, the U.S. has approved four rounds of aid to Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion, amounting to approximately $113 billion for military equipment. Further aid is expected to be voted on once the House of Representatives elects a new Speaker.
