French Regulators Order Apple to Halt iPhone 12 Sales in France
French regulators have instructed Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 in France due to concerns about its electromagnetic radiation levels. The regulators claim that the phone emits levels of radiation that exceed European Union standards for exposure.
Apple, however, disputes these findings and maintains that the iPhone 12 complies with all regulations.
The French government agency responsible for wireless communications frequencies issued the order after the iPhone 12 failed one of two tests for electromagnetic waves that can be absorbed by the body.
It is not clear why this particular model did not pass the agency’s latest tests, and why only the iPhone 12 was affected.
France’s digital minister, however, stated that the radiation levels of the iPhone 12 are still much lower than levels considered harmful by scientific studies. The agency itself acknowledges that its tests do not reflect typical phone usage.
The National Frequency Agency has called on Apple to fix this issue for phones already in use, and has warned that a recall may be necessary if the problem is not resolved.
The agency tested 141 cellphones and found that the iPhone 12 exceeds the EU standard for electromagnetic energy absorption when held in a hand or carried in a pocket.
However, the phone passed a separate test for radiation levels when kept in a jacket or bag.
Experts have stated that radiation limits are set well below the level at which harm occurs, and a small increase above the threshold is unlikely to have any health consequences.
Users of the iPhone 12 should be able to download an update that prevents radiation exposure from exceeding the limit.
The cause of the higher radiation emitted by the iPhone 12 compared to other models is uncertain, but it may be related to the initial stage of connection when the phone is searching for a signal.
Apple has stated that the iPhone 12 is certified by multiple international bodies and meets all applicable regulations and standards for radiation.

The tests conducted by the agency use a diagnostic lab with a simulated human head and body, and devices transmit at maximum power for a six-minute test. However, these tests do not reflect typical phone usage.

Experts recommend using earphones or switching to texting to reduce cellphone radiation exposure.
