Discover Why Actors Like Drescher Refuse to Back Down & How It’s Changing the Industry

Fran Drescher has successfully led the actors guild through its lengthy strike. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers recently announced that contract negotiations had been suspended due to irreconcilable differences between the two sides. However, Drescher remains steadfast in her resolve. In a recent interview with the AP, she expressed her confusion about the breakdown in negotiations and assured that her union’s determination remains unwavering. The interview has been condensed for clarity and brevity.

Q: Can you discuss what occurred during your negotiations with the AMPTP?
A: They presented us with a proposal package which we spent 36 hours examining. After presenting our feedback, they abruptly announced that they were terminating negotiations. It is not only perplexing, but also disappointing and counterproductive. It is difficult to comprehend why they would walk away from the negotiating table without attempting to find a resolution. However, this incident has only strengthened the determination of our members. They feel deeply insulted, degraded, and dishonored by this dismissal. They are urging me to remain strong and resolute, as they believe this strike must not be in vain.

Q: Can you describe the atmosphere during the negotiations before they broke off? Was there hope that negotiations would be smoother after the studios reached an agreement with the Writers Guild of America?
A: Even in negotiations with the writers guild, the AMPTP similarly terminated discussions. Now that the writers have reached a contract agreement, there appears to be a more positive atmosphere. However, at the time, tensions were high. The AMPTP showed great resistance in making any concessions. They seemed unwilling to compromise. It is clear that they are accustomed to having things go their way. The notion of compensating our working members for the loss of income in the streaming era is repulsive to them. They view our demands as an affront to their authority. I have stressed to them that such business practices are no longer sustainable in today’s world. They need to consider how this will impact and value the workers who contribute to their industry. They have a responsibility as industry leaders to set an example for businesses worldwide, treating their workers with gratitude, inclusion, and respect.

Q: Next week marks the official record for the longest strike in your guild’s history. How do you feel about how we reached this point?
A: The fact that the AMPTP ceased communication with us on July 12 and did not resume until less than 10 days ago is telling. They have only made themselves available for a few brief meetings. It is apparent that they are not genuinely interested in negotiating. They expect us to accept their terms without question, disregarding our struggles to make a living and support our families. They constantly mention the exorbitant amount of money they spend on production and salaries for our union, but fail to acknowledge how that is divided among thousands of people. It only significantly benefits our highest-earning members, whom we are also fighting for. They are concerned that their image and essence as stars will be exploited and manipulated.

Q: What happens now?
A: We are currently in the midst of a serious negotiation committee meeting. Our members are actively picketing and their determination is stronger than ever. The AMPTP may believe that we will give in, but we will not waver. This is a crucial moment and we must remain steadfast in our cause.
