Discover What Half of Drivers Believe about the Potential Dangers of Self-Driving Cars

Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS) has unveiled the mixed sentiments among motorists regarding the introduction of driverless cars. A recent poll conducted by Walnut Unlimited revealed that 51% of drivers are opposed to autonomous vehicles, while the remaining 49% are supportive.

VWFS UK CEO, Mike Todd, advised drivers that although advancements are being made, fully autonomous vehicles will not be a common sight on the roads for many years to come. He stated, “Automated cars are an exciting area for the industry, but there is still a long way to go. People currently expect to continue using vehicles they can drive themselves.”

The study also indicated that 60% of UK drivers believe they are better drivers than autonomous cars. Additionally, 39% of surveyed drivers expressed concerns about potential harm to occupants if the technology fails. However, the Occupational Road Safety Alliance (ORSA) reported that 94% of road accidents are caused by human error.

Mike further emphasized that as driverless technology continues to develop, it will become safer and more convenient for motorists. He stated, “The UK’s love of driving remains strong, but automation has the potential to make our roads easier and safer. We are just beginning to explore the adoption of automated driving, and it will be interesting to observe how opinions evolve as we progress.”

The concept of self-driving vehicles dates back to the 1920s, although early models lacked artificial intelligence and relied on remote control by a separate driver. Genuine autonomous vehicles arrived in the 1980s and 90s, with the ParkShuttle being the first to transport the public at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. While no fully autonomous cars are currently available to the public, many new models incorporate driverless features that can assume certain controls, necessitating the driver’s constant attention to the road.
