The 61st New York Film Festival, known for showcasing over 100 films from 45 different countries, is currently taking place at various venues in Lincoln Center and throughout New York City. This week’s highlights include some premieres that will be opening soon in theaters nationwide or available for streaming online. Part 1 of the festival’s reviews can be found here. The festival will conclude on October 15.

One of the highlights is Sofia Coppola’s new film, “Priscilla,” which portrays the story of Priscilla Beaulieu, a young girl from Texas who meets Elvis Presley at the age of 14 and later becomes his wife. Coppola takes a unique perspective by telling the story from Priscilla’s point of view, highlighting the ups and downs of their relationship. Cailee Spaeny delivers a remarkable performance as Priscilla, while Jacob Elordi shines as Elvis. Unlike other films about Elvis, “Priscilla” does not feature any of his songs, instead focusing on Priscilla’s journey. The film will screen on October 8 and 15 and will be released in theaters on November 3. Watch the trailer for “Priscilla” below:

Novelist John Le Carré, known for his espionage novels, is the subject of the documentary “The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories From My Life.” Le Carré, whose real name was David Cornwell, rarely gave interviews before his death in 2020. However, in 2016, he published a memoir and participated in an on-camera interview with filmmaker Errol Morris. The documentary delves into Le Carré’s personal life, including his complicated relationships with his parents and his reflections on his career as a writer. Le Carré’s books often drew inspiration from his own experiences, particularly in relation to the duplicitous nature of espionage. “The Pigeon Tunnel” will be released in theaters and on Apple TV+ on October 20. Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel deliver fantastic performances, enhanced by their real-life history as a couple. The film pays meticulous attention to the preparation and presentation of food, making it a feast for the eyes. “The Taste of Things” is France’s official entry for the International Feature Oscar. In “About Dry Grasses,” Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan tells the story of Samet, an art teacher assigned to a rural elementary school in eastern Turkey. Samet’s comfortable rapport with one of his students leads to an accusation of inappropriate contact, while he also becomes involved in a romantic triangle with a fellow teacher. The film explores themes of social discomfort and intellectual isolation, as well as the struggles of the characters to navigate their personal traumas. Ece Bagci delivers a remarkable performance as Samet’s student, while Merve Dizdar shines as the damaged teacher caught between Samet and his best friend. “About Dry Grasses” is Turkey’s official entry for the International Feature Film category.
