Discover the Top 21 Science-Backed Songs to Boost Your Running Distance!

The playlist curated by fitness experts is a perfect companion for fitness buffs who engage in activities like running, cycling, rowing, and stair climbing. These energetic tunes are designed to motivate and help you maximize your cardio workout.

The one-hour playlist, consisting of 21 songs, was created by researchers at Total Shape, who analyzed Spotify’s global charts from the summer. The featured tracks were selected for their strong and uninterrupted beats, with tempos ranging from 120 to 135 BPM, which is considered ideal for cardio exercises.

Spanning various genres including EDM, reggaeton, R&B, and K-pop, the playlist includes popular hits by artists like Calvin Harris, Beyonce, and Jung Kook.

‘Listening to music has been found to lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and increase dopamine levels, the happiness hormone,’ explained a spokesperson for Total Shape. ‘By selecting songs from global charts, we increase the chances of finding new songs that listeners will enjoy.’

Regardless of the intensity of your workout, the Spotify playlist is tailored to motivate you to run faster, cycle further, row harder, and climb higher. Slow songs would not be as effective in maximizing your gym session, as they lack the necessary tempo to keep up with your pace.

The Total Shape spokesperson further detailed their selection process, stating that they considered factors such as danceability, energy, and stability of the songs to ensure they are upbeat and free from disruptive breaks.

Excitingly, the spokesperson revealed that their algorithm, DJ Science, produced a flawless playlist that serves its intended purpose of supporting cardio workouts perfectly.

In 2012, Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London compared exercise music to a legal performance-enhancing drug, stating, ‘Anything that relieves the negative feelings associated with exercise is welcome.’

The study that compiled the best songs to workout to was commissioned by Total Shape, a trusted online resource for fitness-related information, including diet, supplements, and healthy lifestyle advice.
