Discover the Surprising Benefits: Scientists Confirm Yogurt Consumption as an Effective Remedy for Garlic Breath | Food Science

If you’ve ever avoided garlic to avoid embarrassing situations, fear not! You can enjoy garlic without worrying about its lingering odor – just add a spoonful of yogurt. Research conducted by Manpreet Kaur and Prof Sheryl Barringer at the Ohio State University in Columbus, US, found that the fat and protein in yogurt can prevent most of the smelly compounds in garlic from escaping into the air.

In their study, published in the journal Molecules, Kaur and Barringer tested the effectiveness of yogurt, as well as its water, fat, and protein components, in neutralizing the sulfur compounds responsible for garlic’s strong smell. They discovered that yogurt alone can reduce 99% of the odor-producing compounds in raw garlic. While each component had a neutralizing effect, fat and protein were found to be more effective than water. Additionally, yogurts with higher fat content were found to be more effective than lower-fat options.

Previous research has also suggested that consuming whole milk can help eliminate garlic breath, as the fats in milk bind to the smelly molecules. Barringer explained that proteins in yogurt may play a role in trapping volatile molecules before they are released into the air. She even speculated that Greek yogurt, with its higher protein content, might be particularly effective. Fruit-flavored yogurts could also work, but regardless of the type, yogurt should be consumed immediately after eating garlic for optimal results.
