Discover the Spectacle: Less than 10M Tuned in for the GOP Presidential Debate

The Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night was watched by about 9.5 million people across all platforms. This is a 27% decline from the 13 million viewers who tuned in for the first debate in August. Interestingly, the first two GOP debates of this cycle have attracted only half the audience compared to the first two debates of the 2016 cycle, despite having a similar number of candidates and no Republican incumbent. The decline in viewership suggests a waning interest in the GOP race, possibly because Donald Trump did not participate in the debate.

However, despite the decline in viewership, the Wednesday debate emerged as the primetime winner among shows on cable or legacy TV networks. It surpassed the season finale of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and CBS’ season premiere of “Survivor,” both of which garnered fewer than 5.5 million viewers. The next debate is scheduled for early November in Miami, but Trump’s campaign has confirmed that he will not be attending.
