In a stunning collaboration, Taylor Swift and AMC have unveiled the impressive results of the Eras Tour concert film. It has achieved the second-highest domestic opening for the month of October in history.

The film made an impressive $92.8 million in its first three days of release, slightly falling short of AMC’s expectations of $95 million to $97 million, as well as the predictions of industry analysts who anticipated a $100 million-plus opening.

Despite this, Taylor Swift’s theatrical debut is considered a massive success, considering the film’s genre and limited release. The Eras Tour concert film has already shattered records and is poised to break even more before its run concludes.

Box office experts describe the film as a “unicorn” in the theater industry, as no other concert film has generated such rapid ticket sales or demand from theater chains. Additionally, ticket prices for the film were 40% higher than traditional movie releases, leading experts to believe it could see a significant boost in overall box office revenue.

However, the film did face some challenges. The announcement of Thursday previews came less than a day before tickets were available, and Friday showings didn’t start until 6 p.m. local time. Consequently, many viewers had likely already secured tickets for later showings during the weekend, resulting in missed business opportunities from the early Friday screenings.

As a result, the Eras Tour film earned just $2.8 million from last-minute Thursday night previews, bringing its opening day total to $37.5 million. In comparison, the highest October opening belongs to Warner Bros.’ “Joker” from 2019, which garnered $13.3 million from Thursday previews and $39.3 million on the opening day. “Joker” ultimately earned $96.2 million domestically over the weekend.

Sony’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” from 2021 claimed the third-highest October opening with $11.6 million from Thursday night previews and a $37.4 million opening Friday.

Furthermore, while the Eras Tour film played in 3,855 theaters, the most for any concert film, “Joker” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” opened in roughly 4,400 and 4,225 locations respectively, according to data from Comscore.

Looking ahead, making comparisons between the success of the Eras Tour film and other releases will be challenging as it is only running on weekends. Additionally, predicting the film’s second-week performance is difficult due to the lack of comparable concert film data and the unknown impact of the absence of mid-week showings on audience turnout. Typically, blockbuster-style releases experience a 50% to 70% drop in their second weekend.

The theatrical run of the Eras Tour film is scheduled to end on November 5.

AMC reported that the Eras Tour concert film has earned an impressive $123.5 million globally, putting it on track to surpass the $262.5 million international box office revenue of 2009’s “Michael Jackson’s This Is It.”
