According to History.com, there are around 29 states that have chosen not to celebrate Columbus Day and have instead renamed or replaced it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Although Indigenous Peoples’ Day is recognized by the U.S. government, it is not yet a federal holiday.
Are federal and local government offices open on Columbus Day?
All federal and state offices will be closed, from legislatures to courthouses, on Monday, Oct. 9.
At the local level, Peoria County government offices and the city will remain open on Columbus Day.
Will the post office be open on Columbus Day?
The United States Postal Service will be closed on Columbus Day, with no mail delivery.
