One story that caught our attention is about Brewgooder, a non-profit beer brand that supports environmental and community projects in Africa and the UK. Founder Alan Mahon explains that every pint of Brewgooder lager that you buy helps provide 100 pints of clean water to someone in Africa. What’s more, their latest limited edition beer, created in collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery, is made with Fonio, a west African “super-grain” that offers a sustainable alternative to barley. By sourcing this grain from community co-ops, Brewgooder ensures that their suppliers are taken care of. In fact, the company aims to donate £100,000 to key projects by 2024. So, not only can you enjoy a delicious beer, but you can also make a positive impact on the world.

Another noteworthy story is about Toast Ale, a brewery that produces beer from leftover bread. Since 2016, they’ve upcycled three million slices of bread and donated £100,000 to environmental charities. With the support of Heineken as a strategic investor, Toast Ale plans to open its first permanent micro-brewery this year. This innovative approach to reducing food waste is both commendable and delicious.

The London-based Queer Brewing Project is also making waves in the beer community. Their mission is to promote greater LGBTQ+ visibility through their unique beers, such as the Existence as a Radical Act pale ale and the Softboi table beer. Founder Lily Waite describes beer as a form of “slacktivism” but emphasizes that even small changes can make a difference. The Queer Brewing Project has also collaborated with other brewers, including a partnership with New York’s Dyke Beer. By advocating for inclusivity and diversity, the Queer Brewing Project is challenging the status quo and creating positive change.

Beer can be more than just a refreshing beverage, it can also be a powerful artistic medium. Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh explores themes of black power, community, and migration through his unique beer creations. His latest beer, Untitled 1, was developed in collaboration with the Drop Project Brewing Company and is now available at the Tate Modern’s Corner bar. By using beer as a narrative tool, Ogboh invites us to consider the historical and contemporary significance of institutions like the Tate Modern.

Lastly, we have the incredible story of Pravda, a brewery located on the frontline in western Ukraine. In response to Russia’s invasion, Pravda launched the Brew For Ukraine campaign, mobilizing brewers from around the world to create an open-source recipe for charity. This campaign raised over €3mn for Ukrainian causes. Pravda’s newest beer, Punisher, is a triple IPA that serves as a fundraiser for drones. But Pravda’s impact goes beyond brewing delicious beer. It serves as a linchpin in the Lviv community, hosting charity performances, acting as a bomb shelter, and providing a hub for international press. According to co-founder Yuriy Zastavny, beer has the power to unite people from all walks of life.

In conclusion, the Editor’s Digest is your key to unlocking a world of intriguing stories in the beer industry.
