MANILA, Philippines–Gilas Pilipinas superstar Justin Brownlee received a hero’s welcome at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sunday morning. Brownlee, still in awe of the team’s historic gold medal run at the 19th Asian Games, spoke to reporters about his excitement upon returning home.

“It feels great to be back home and bring back gold for the fans and for the people here in the Philippines to see,” Brownlee shared. “Man, I still can’t believe it. It’s such a surreal moment.”

Known for his exceptional performances, especially against China where he scored 33 points, Brownlee played a crucial role in leading the hastily assembled national team to victory. The team’s success in Hangzhou marked a significant milestone for Philippine basketball.

Brownlee, who also gained recognition for his contributions to the Barangay Ginebra team in the Philippine Basketball Association, acknowledged the magnitude of the accomplishment at the Asian Games. “It was an eight-year drought for Ginebra, but 61 years? Man, that’s special,” he expressed.

When asked about the possibility of having a statue built in his likeness to honor his achievements, Brownlee humbly responded, “Man, that would be unbelievable. I never dreamed of having a statue anywhere in the world. But that would be a dream come true. A very special thing.”

While Brownlee’s remarkable journey from temporary import to legendary figure in Philippine basketball could make this idea a reality, he has always been focused on his dedication and personal growth. “Like I said, I’m still shocked. It feels so surreal. I can’t believe that I’m standing before you guys talking about a gold medal,” he expressed.

“You know, back in my first time coming to the Philippines—those stories from Sol Mercado, even some other guys like LA Tenorio who talk about the early days—it’s all amazing. But being here, in this position at the present time, is such a surreal moment,” Brownlee added with a smile.
