Discover the Exciting New Boarding Policy of United Airlines – A Game-Changer!

United Airlines is shaking up its boarding process by giving window seat passengers priority. This change, although seemingly obvious, has caught the attention of media outlets. However, it’s important to note that window seat passengers will still board after pre-boarding passengers and those in higher classes. According to the New York Times, this new process, referred to as WILMA (window, middle, aisle), allows window seat holders to board before middle or aisle seat passengers. The last group to board will be those in basic economy or without a boarding group listed on their pass, as reported by Travel + Leisure.

United Airlines previously tested the WILMA method at five airports in 2017. However, other reports suggest that the airline used this method more extensively and then stopped when the basic economy fare was introduced. This was due to the limitations of their computer systems at the time, which only allowed for five boarding groups. Now, with updated systems, United Airlines is resuming the WILMA process. The Washington Post claims that the introduction of the basic economy fare actually prompted the launch of WILMA in 2017. Regardless, United Airlines has been using the standard front-to-back boarding approach until now, as reported by Conde Nast. The implementation of WILMA on October 26 is expected to shorten boarding time by up to two minutes. Some online commenters have expressed concerns that aisle seat passengers may struggle to find overhead bin space if window seat passengers board first. (Read more United Airlines stories.)
