While undoubtedly not as captivating or fierce as the ongoing battle for the governorship between incumbent Republican Tate Reeves and Democratic challenger Brandon Presley, there are numerous other statewide races taking place on Tuesday. Here is a look at the candidates running for various offices:
Lieutenant Governor:
– Delbert Hosemann: Incumbent Republican seeking another term as the state’s No. 2 official. Hosemann has played a crucial role in the state Legislature, overseeing the Senate and spearheading important legislation such as changing the state flag, increasing teacher pay, and disbursing federal funds for COVID-19 relief and infrastructure.
– D. Ryan Grover: The lone Democrat in the lieutenant governor’s race, Grover is a former candidate for the Oxford Board of Aldermen. With a background in marketing and consulting, Grover aims to create an efficient state government that prioritizes the needs of Mississippians.
Secretary of State:
– Michael Watson: Incumbent Republican running for re-election as secretary of state. Watson has focused on election security and combating human trafficking during his time in office.
– Ty Pinkins: Democratic challenger for Secretary of State. Pinkins, a veteran, lawyer, and former White House communications aide, has pledged to advocate for new economic policies beyond the basic duties of the office.
Attorney General:
– Lynn Fitch: Incumbent Republican seeking a second term as Attorney General. Fitch, the state’s first Republican attorney general since 1878, has been involved in high-profile cases such as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and has challenged the Biden administration through various lawsuits.
– Greta Martin: Democrat and Jackson-based attorney currently serving as litigation director at Disability Rights Mississippi. Martin has actively supported the recent ruling that struck down Mississippi’s ban on voting after conviction for certain crimes.
Auditor:
– Shad White: Republican State Auditor seeking his second full term. White was appointed auditor in 2018 and has been instrumental in uncovering welfare fraud in the state, involving well-known figures like Brett Favre.
– Larry Bradford: Democrat and mayor of Anguilla, a small town in Mississippi.
Treasurer:
– David McRae: Incumbent Republican State Treasurer running for a second term. McRae has been focused on managing the state’s investment portfolio and advocating for college savings plans.
– Addie Green: Democrat and former member of the Bolton Board of Aldermen. Green previously ran against McRae in 2019.
Commissioner of Agriculture:
