A huge discovery is causing waves in the scientific community – a giant underwater mountain, or seamount, has been found on the floor of the Pacific Ocean near the coast of Guatemala. Measuring 1,600 meters tall, this massive structure is nearly twice the height of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building.
The seamount was identified during an ocean expedition in July using advanced mapping technology. According to the Schmidt Ocean Institute, which conducted the mission, the seamount is over 2,400 meters below sea level and spans across 14 square kilometers. The discovery was made possible by the institute’s research vessel, the Falkor, which is designed to precisely map the ocean floor using high-tech sonar equipment.
The seamount’s unexpected appearance amazed the research team, as it was not previously recorded in any database. Only about 25% of the ocean floor has been mapped to date, leaving a vast portion of unexplored territory. The areas surrounding seamounts tend to host incredibly diverse marine life, creating unique ecosystems that are home to a significant number of endemic species.
