President Joe Biden is heading to Michigan today to show support for striking autoworkers. This move is seen as desperate and embarrassing since Biden claims to be the most pro-union president but has not received the endorsement of the UAW, one of the nation’s largest private sector unions. It’s worth noting that the UAW has endorsed every Democratic presidential candidate in the past and supported Biden in 2020.

Biden is becoming increasingly worried as his poll numbers continue to decline and his optimistic messages about the economy fail to resonate with the public. A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that approval for Biden’s handling of the economy and immigration is at an all-time low. Additionally, 44% of respondents say they feel worse off since Biden took office, which is the highest percentage for any president since 1986.

Rubbing salt in the wound, public opinion on Donald Trump is now evenly split, with 47% approving and 49% disapproving. This marks Trump’s highest approval rating while in office. In a hypothetical matchup next year, Trump leads Biden by 9 points.

Furthermore, if the government shuts down due to budget disputes, 44% of voters would blame Biden and the Democratic Party, while only 33% would hold Republicans responsible. This highlights a significant gap in public perception.

The ABC poll does not provide data on respondents’ ratings by income or race, so we turn to Economist/YouGov polling for a more detailed analysis. The latest survey shows that 41% of those polled approve of Biden’s job performance, while 55% do not, which aligns with the average of other polls. When examining the breakdowns by race and income group, there is cause for concern within the Biden camp.

Among Hispanics, Biden only has a 44% approval rating, compared to 48% disapproval. This is surprisingly low for a Democratic president. Even among black voters, enthusiasm for Biden is tepid, with only 57% approval. Exit polls from the 2020 election showed that 87% of Blacks and 67% of Hispanics voted for Biden, making this decline in support alarming.

Additionally, Biden’s lowest approval rating (39%) comes from middle-income Americans earning $50,000 to $100,000 per year. In the 2020 election, 56% of voters in this income bracket voted for Biden.

Union workers are a crucial demographic for Biden. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka acknowledged their importance in a post-election speech, stating that “Biden’s path to the White House ran through America’s labor movement.” According to a post-election survey, union members voted 58% in favor of Biden and Kamala Harris, compared to the general public’s three-point margin in favor of Biden. However, Biden can’t afford to lose union voters, which explains his decision to openly support striking autoworkers, an unprecedented move for a U.S. president.

But Biden’s relationship with the UAW is complicated. The UAW blames him for pushing the transition to electric vehicles, which threatens the jobs of their members. Electric vehicle manufacturing requires 40% less labor, and the new jobs in battery manufacturing are predominantly located in right-to-work states, where non-union labor can be hired. This puts the UAW at a disadvantage.

In June, Biden’s administration approved a $9.2 billion loan for three battery plants operated by Ford and South Korea’s SK in Kentucky and Tennessee, both right-to-work states. This decision outraged UAW leaders, who criticized the government for supporting companies that don’t prioritize labor standards. They also demanded public support from Biden for their union’s demands, which he has provided on multiple occasions.

A meeting between UAW representatives and Biden at the White House further highlighted their disagreement. Former President Trump, who has been critical of the UAW’s leadership, is planning to address union members in Detroit on September 27th. Trump believes that Biden’s push for electric vehicles will harm the car industry and the union.

Fain, a UAW spokesperson, stated that their union is committed to fighting for the working class and against corporate greed. They criticize electing wealthy individuals like Trump and Biden, who they believe have no understanding of the struggles faced by working-class Americans.

However, Biden is also facing challenges with union members. Working-class Americans have been impacted by inflation during Biden’s presidency, which many economists attribute to excessive federal spending. Real wages (adjusted for inflation) have decreased by 4% since Biden took office.

Union members have also grown dissatisfied with Biden’s war on fossil fuels, as it has led to higher oil and gasoline prices. This shift away from traditional energy sources has caused concerns among union workers.

Overall, Biden’s ability to maintain support among union members remains uncertain. It remains to be seen whether his show of support for striking autoworkers will be enough to win them back.
